Germany have made a major statement at the European Championships by thrashing reigning champions Portugal 4-2 in Munich on Saturday.
Die Mannschaft, who had lost 1-0 to France in their opening game of Euro 2020, piled on the goals after Cristiano Ronaldo had scored the opener in the 15th minute from Diogo Jota’s pass.
Ruben Dias and Raphael Guerreiro scored own goals before half-time, with Kai Havertz adding another from Robin Gosens’ pass in the 51st minute.
Gosens got a goal of his own on the hour, before Jota netted a consolation, with Ronaldo providing the assist this time.
Germany boss Joachim Low was full of praise for Gosens, when he said: “I don’t know if it was the game of a lifetime for him, maybe he still has to play that.
“But an amazing performance from him. He worked very hard and on top of that he was a constant threat up front as well.
“That is exactly what we needed today.”
Elsewhere on Saturday, France could only manage a 1-1 draw with Hungary despite having 15 shots, including four on target.
The draw left France boss Didier Deschamps frustrated, although he paid credit to Hungary. He said: “Hungary put on the match of their lives. Good for them.
“We had chances in the first half and found ourselves behind to their only opportunity. They had a lot of support and that clearly gave them strength. They defended really well, as they did against Portugal until late on. It’s a point. It’s not what we hoped for but given the context, we will take it anyway.”
Spain continued to stutter, being held to a 1-1 draw with Poland in Sevilla.
