June 22, 2021 – Major League Soccer (MLS) – New England Revolution News Release
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution (6-1-2; 20 pts.) will host the New York Red Bulls (4-4-0; 12 pts.) on Wednesday night for a 7:00 p.m. ET kickoff on Pride Night at Gillette Stadium. The Revolution will look to remain perfect at home while going for a fifth consecutive win in the second of three encounters this season between the MLS original sides. CBS Boston’s pregame coverage begins at 6:30 p.m. ET with “Revolution Kickoff” on WSBK-TV38. The match airs locally on TV38 and on myRITV in Rhode Island, as well as on ESPN+ for out-of-market subscribers. The contest is available on the radio on 98.5 The Sports Hub and 1260 AM Nossa Radio.
New England, currently atop the Eastern Conference standings through nine games played, enter Wednesday’s match on a six-game unbeaten streak following last Saturday’s 3-2 win over New York City FC. Winners of four in a row and tied with Seattle for the MLS lead in victories (6), the Revolution will aim for their first five-game win streak since 2015, when the club registered six straight wins. With a victory over New York, New England will collect wins in its first five home games of a season for the first time in club history.
The Revolution, currently second in MLS in points (20) and points per game (2.22) and tied for third in goal differential (+5), lead the all-time series against New York, 32-28-17, including a 24-6-8 record in Foxborough. In the teams’ most recent meeting on May 22 at Gillette Stadium, the Revs rallied from an early deficit to claim a 3-1 win with goals from Gustavo Bou, Tajon Buchanan, and Adam Buksa. Since that match, New England won its first two away matches of the 2021 campaign, 1-0 at FC Cincinnati on May 29 and 3-2 at New York City FC on June 19.
Last Saturday’s victory saw goalkeeper Matt Turner log a season-high seven saves including a penalty-kick denial in the 12th minute of play en route to his 30th victory in MLS. Turner was voted MLS Player of the Week for Week 8 for his performance, becoming the first New England goalkeeper to receive the honor and the first Revs player since 2017. Turner was joined on the MLS Team of the Week by midfielder Carles Gil, who recorded two assists to extend his career-best streak to four games with a helper, and Sporting Director and Head Coach Bruce Arena. The winningest active head coach in MLS, Arena’s next victory will be his 225th in MLS regular season play.
The Revolution will celebrate the club’s annual Pride Night on Wednesday, showing solidarity with the LGBTQIA community throughout the stadium and on the pitch while recognizing local organizations and individuals working to end discrimination and violence based on sexual orientation and gender identity. A portion of all sales of Pride-themed gear at the Gillette Stadium Pro Shop will benefit the Boston Alliance of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Youth (BAGLY). Members of BAGLY’s Youth Leadership Council will be recognized as Heroes of the Match. With the Progress Pride Flag flying above Gillette Stadium for the first time, Miranda Rae – the 2020 Boston Music Awards R&B Artist of the Year – will perform both the “Star-Spangled Banner” and “Lift Every Voice and Sing”. More information on the club’s Pride Night celebration can be found here.
Wednesday also marks the first night of the Revolution’s “Get a Shot, Take a Shot” vaccine initiative launched in conjunction with the Kraft Center for Community Health. Fans ages 12 and up attending Wednesday’s match and subsequent home matches through Aug. 8 will be able to receive the Pfizer vaccine on-site at the mobile clinic located on the Gillette Stadium concourse adjacent to the lighthouse. Beginning when gates open through the 60th minute of play, any eligible fan who receives the vaccine at the match will be invited to take a shot on goal on the pitch after the match.
