Fernandinho has signed a new one-year contract to stay at Manchester City for 2021-22 season.

Since arriving at Man City in summer 2013, Fernandinho has scored 24 goals and produced 31 assists in 350 appearances across all competitions, with 13 trophies to boot.

Fernandinho however believes mentally that “the job is not done yet” as he embarks on his ninth season at the Citizens, with the aim of helping the team “achieve the goals that they’re looking for.”

Having looked set for a quadruple last season before Chelsea ended their hopes in FA Cup Semi-Finals and Champions League Final with a pair of 1-0 defeats, Fernandinho believes that “there’s still places to improve and to get those targets.”

As club captain, the Brazilian also added that he is looking to keep leading the team on and off the pitch, commenting: “If I can keep doing the same way, leading them inside the pitch, off the pitch, to help them to improve and get better and to perform better during the games, I would be the happiest person there.”

Man City Director of Football, Txiki Begiristain meanwhile hailed Fernandinho as an “outstanding footballer” and considered him amongst the world’s best with an “exceptional” work ethic in “attitude and consistency” which has been influential in the squad.

Begiristain also noted that with a considerable number of young players like Arijanet Muric, Phil Foden and Ferran Torres in the squad, retaining Fernandinho was “vital” due to his “knowledge and experience.”

Fernandinho is the latest City player in the men’s squad to put pen on a new contract after Kevin De Bruyne agreed a new deal in April until June 2025, whilst Demi Stokes and Ellie Roebuck signed new deals in the women’s squad.

City however will begin the 2021-22 season without club legend, Sergio Aguero for the first time in a decade, following his departure at end of last season to switch to Barcelona on a free transfer.
