FC Cincinnati dropped the club’s final road match of 2021 to Philadelphia Union, 2-0, Sunday night at Subaru Park.
Daniel Gazdag’s deflected header in the 11th minute put the Union on the board early. The hosts doubled their lead in the 53rd minute on a strike from 18-year-old homegrown midfielder Paxten Aaronson.
FC Cincinnati were shutout for the first time since a 1-0 loss to Orlando City SC on October 16.
FC Cincinnati conclude the 2021 season next Sunday, November 7 at TQL Stadium against Atlanta United FC at 3:30 p.m. ET. The game will be televised on WSTR 64, streamed regionally on fccincinnati.com/stream, out of market on ESPN+, on radio on Fox Sports AM 1360 while an audio stream will be available via the iHeartRadio app.

On the match
“Obviously, not the result that we want. I thought in the first we came out a little bit flat. The message was to manage the first 15 minutes, and then we go from there. Having that goal scored in the first 15 minutes was a little tough because you can tell, we didn’t want the game to get out of hand. But again, it was a little slow for us, we need to get in a better rhythm earlier.”
“As the game progressed, we got a little bit more comfortable, possession was more in favor of us, but they had more of the dangerous chances … the second half was a little bit better. They obviously scored but again we weren’t able to get those attacking moments that we did in the last game against Nashville when we were more aggressive going forward. I thought we had some moments, but we didn’t capitalize on them.”
On the experience as interim head coach
“It’s been a challenging journey for myself, for the coaches who took the baton and stepped up for the club in terms of seeing out the season with the boys that they have here. For me, it’s been a great experience in terms of where I want to be as a head coach moving forward, things I need to get better at. It’s been a learning experience for me that I’ve been appreciative of.”
“We keep moving. Would I say I’m relieved, no, I’m a competitor, I want to keep going as long as I can. But, obviously, the season ends next week and for me, I’m appreciative for the club for giving me the opportunity and for the guys who are helping out in the back room and for everyone else who has stepped up. Hopefully, preparation for next week we can get the result and finish off on a good note.”

“We started pretty good, getting the ball and moving it. I just keep saying the same thing over and over again, some efforts are not good enough. Watching, not tracking back, overloads, it’s a frustrating one. [Philadelphia Union] are dynamic, they move off the ball, guys make unselfish runs, and then we play too easy. Everybody comes to feet, and we don’t stretch them. We don’t play in behind. It’s just basics.”

“You can see we have quality. We have players that can win games. Their skillset is there. But it’s got to be here. It’s got to be in your heart. Some games are ugly, some games are pretty good football. But you have to make it tough, and you have to earn it. You have to pick up first and seconds balls, it’s one of those things.”
