PORTUGAL’S big three clubs made a massive mistake not signing Ryan Gauld, according to the manager who brought him to Vancouver Whitecaps.

The former Dundee United starlet has been a huge success since moving from Portuguese strugglers Farense in the summer to the MLS.

He was signed by former Vancouver boss Marc dos Santos, who was fired from the Canadian club only a month after Gauld arrived.

And he reckons Gauld’s former club Sporting Lisbon, Benfica and Porto made a major error not moving for the 25-year-old, after his impressive form at Whitecaps.

He said: “Ryan Gauld was a player who I followed for a long time and when I learned of his situation and was alerted by his manager, there was no hesitation.

“We knew that he was a player who, with the characteristics he has, would adapt very quickly to MLS.

“I was unlucky enough to leave the club when he arrived. He was a player I worked hard to sign. I believed in him a lot.

“But I’m really happy that because he came in right away with a strong impact who has helped a lot. He is very responsible for what the team is doing today.

“The last time I spoke to him he told me he was determined to be a top player in the MLS.

“He wasn’t thinking, ‘oh, I want to do a little here so I can go somewhere else’.

“He is very happy there and when he went it was with the goal of making a career and having a strong name in the league.

“I don’t know what Sporting, Porto and Benfica were thinking and whether they tried to sign him. I can’t speak for these clubs.

“But I think he has the technical quality for those clubs for sure.

“He’s a player with very high ability, a good final ball, a fantastic set-piece taker. We will have to see if they return for him.”

Meanwhile, Dundee United were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw with Ross County yesterday after the Staggies scored a late equaliser.

It means Tam Courts’ men missed out on the chance to leapfrog Celtic in the table – for last night, at least.
