Everton are plotting a late deadline day swoop for Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli, as new manager Frank Lampard eyes reinforcements.
The Toffees have confirmed the appointment of Frank Lampard as their new manager on Monday. The English tactician, 43, who has succeeded Rafael Benitez at Goodison Park, is keen to add another midfielder with Donny Van de Beek on the brink of completing a loan move from Manchester United.
Dele Alli, 25, has emerged as a target for Lampard, who is an admirer of the Tottenham player. He has fallen out of favour at Spurs, managing only 10 Premier League appearances this term. The English midfielder’s stock has dipped massively over the last two years and having not featured much under new manager Antonio Conte, he might have to leave Spurs to reinvigorate his career.
With Anwar El Ghazi already on loan at Goodison Park, the Royal Blues have reached their maximum of two domestic loans in a season. This means any move for Alli in this window will have to be permanent.
Can Everton enjoy a successful second half of the season?
Everton are reeling at 16th on the table, having lost four out of their last five games. Frank Lampard faces an uphill task to inspire his players and clinch a top-half finish this season. The ex-Chelsea and Derby County boss will at least bring some optimism to the Toffees after what’s been a horrible first half of the 2021/22 campaign.
With Everton already bringing in four new players during the winter window and remain hopeful of adding another before the deadline, Lampard will have the squad at his disposal to turn around the Merseysiders’ season.
Dele Alli could make an instant impact at Everton
Dele Alli has failed to recapture the form that saw him star at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. He has not played for England since June 2019 because of his form and fitness problems. The creative midfielder is keen to leave Spurs for regular first-team football, which makes Everton an ideal destination.
Lampard isn’t a pragmatic manager unlike Benitez and wants his team to play an expansive and attractive brand of football. In a system that will see creative players get more involved than before at Everton, Alli has the required qualities to shine under the newly-appointed manager. He can play in different attacking positions and give the strikers the kind of service they have lacked this season so far.
The Englishman can potentially combine well with the likes of Donny Van de Beek, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison in the final third of the pitch, whilst adding much-needed depth in the midfield department. The ex-MK Dons man can make an instant impact at Everton and lift the spirits.
All in all, the time is perhaps right for Alli to end his Tottenham career and start a new journey with Everton.
