West Ham United kept their 100% record start to the Europa League campaign following a 2-0 victory over Rapid Wien on Thursday evening.
West Ham United were the better side in the first half and were denied a goal by the woodwork in the 27th minute. Cresswell’s corner to the back post was met by a stooping Dawson, who cracked a header against the near post from eight yards.
Two minutes later, the Hammers took the lead and not less than what they deserved. Wimmer never got tight to Yarmolenko, who with his back to goal spun and found Antonio with a lovely dinked pass into the box. Penalty claim
Johnson was penalized for what the referee deemed a trip on Grull, but the replay suggested the substitute fell over his own ankle. There was a VAR review and the penalty decision was overruled.
Huge miss
West Ham should have had the game wrapped up. Bowen latched onto a through-ball in behind the Rapid defence. He attempted to round the goalkeeper and was forced slightly wider than he would have liked but he should still hit the target with his shot. Instead, it flew a few yards over the bar. What a chance. The goal was gaping.
West Ham got the second goal in the stoppage time. Bowen set it up, finding Benrahma on the left-hand side of the box, and the Algerian brought the ball back onto his right foot and curled a low shot into the bottom corner.
Group Standings
The Hammers are at the top of Group H with six points, three above second-placed Dinamo Zagreb.
