Eddie Howe has signed a new long-term contract to stay in charge of Newcastle United.

Howe arrived in November 2021 on a three-year contract less than one month after a Saudi-Arabian led consortium completed a £300 million takeover, which led to Steve Bruce being sacked as manager as part of a coaching revamp.

The ex Bournemouth manager proceeded to guide Newcastle to a 11th placed finish across the last 27 matches of the Premier League season, during which they gained 44 points and ultimately finished just two points away from a top-ten finish.

This summer saw Howe add extra reinforcement with the signings of Matt Targett, Sven Botman and Nick Pope, which combined with the club’s form since he arrived has persuaded Magpies bosses to hand him a new long-term contract.

Speaking about his decision to extend his stay on Tyneside, Howe commented: “It’s a great feeling to commit my future to this incredible club. I’m extremely proud to be the head coach of Newcastle United and have enjoyed every moment here.”

Howe also praised his backroom staff, players and fans for their efforts in last season’s successful fightback to finish mid-table as he added: “I’d like to take the opportunity to acknowledge my coaching team, the players, staff and supporters. They make it a very special place to be every day.

“I’d also like to extend my gratitude to our owners and to Dan Ashworth. We are still at the start of our journey, but this is an exciting time to be a part of Newcastle United and I’m very excited about the future together.”

Sporting Director, Dan Ashworth meanwhile is “delighted” to secure Howe on a long-term contract, as he said: “He is an incredibly talented leader and has had a huge impact since being appointed in November.

“In the short period of time I have worked with him, I have seen how much of a diligent, detailed, hard-working coach and leader he is.

“This is great news for the club and I am looking forward to working with Eddie and our colleagues on our exciting journey ahead.”
