COLUMBUS – Following a geographically-based draw, U.S. Soccer today announced that Columbus Crew will begin its 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup campaign when they enter in the Third Round of the storied tournament. The Crew will travel to face USL Championship side Detroit City FC at Keyworth Stadium in Hamtramck, Michigan on Tuesday, April 19 at 7:30 p.m. ET. The match will stream live on ESPN+.
The winner of the match will advance to the tournament’s Round of 32, matches for which are slated to take place on May 10 or 11. The opponent, date and location of the Round of 32 match will be determined via a draw set to take place on April 22.
The Crew holds a 20-13-13 all-time record in the U.S. Open Cup play, dating back to the Crew’s tournament debut in 1998. The Black & Gold were crowned U.S. Open Cup champions on October 24, 2002, when they defeated the LA Galaxy 1-0 at Historic Crew Stadium.
This year’s competition is the 107th edition of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup – U.S. Soccer’s National Championship. The tournament, which was first played in the 1913-1914 season, is conducted on a single-game-knockout basis and open to all professional and amateur teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. In 1999, the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in the United States was renamed to honor American soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt, the founder of Major League Soccer and the Columbus Crew.
The 2022 U.S. Open Cup winner will earn $300,000 in prize money, a berth in the 2023 Concacaf Champions League and have its name engraved on the Dewar Challenge Trophy – one of the oldest nationally-contested trophies in American team sports – now on permanent display at the National Soccer Hall of Fame in Frisco, Texas. The runner-up will earn $100,000, while the team that advances the furthest from each lower division will take home a $25,000 cash prize.
