COMMERCE CITY, Colo. – The Colorado Rapids announced today the signing of defender Anthony Markanich to a one-year contract with three club options.
“Anthony had an excellent preseason with our group and demonstrated the qualities and potential that led us to select him in the SuperDraft,” said Pádraig Smith, Colorado Rapids Executive VP & General Manager. “We’re delighted to extend him a contract and officially welcome him to the club.”
Markanich, 22, was selected 26th overall by the Rapids in the 2022 MLS SuperDraft presented by adidas. During his four seasons at Northern Illinois University, Markanich was a three-time First-Team All-MAC honoree and NIU’s first four-time All-MAC recipient since 2002. The left back made 67 appearances for the Huskies, registering 17 goals and adding 24 assists, the latter of which are tied for second-most in program history.
The Rapids will host their 2022 MLS season home opener on Saturday, March 5, against Atlanta United FC at 4 p.m. MT. The match will be broadcast live on Altitude Sports.
