Chelsea need to invest in a ‘leadership spine’ of the team – Talk Chelsea

Chelsea really don’t need to go nuts in the transfer market this summer, they are literally so close to challenging for the title again, but I am fed up of challenging for top four every season and it’s time to advance under Thomas Tuchel.

To do this, it is clear to me exactly what we need to add to this current squad – A ‘leadership spine.’

Eden Hazard could really be set for a return to Chelsea this summer, find out more here.

It was evident again for me at the weekend losing to Leicester City in the FA Cup final. Yes, we have seen improvements in mentalities and some more leadership out on the pitch at times recently, but it is not consistent enough, and there is not enough of them.

Where are the leaders? Where are the motivators? Where are the guys roaring out that this an FA Cup final and we are 1-0 down?

Well, perhaps they were there on 80 minutes when suddenly the Chelsea players decided to turn up and play with some intensity and some urgency, but of course, it was far too little, and far too late.

If Chelsea are to be successful again as in challenging for all competitions they play in, they need to invest in a new centre back, a new defensive midfielder, and a new centre forward.

But these guys need to bring experience and leadership to the team, but most importantly a lot of quality.

Who would they be exactly?

Well, my picks would be either Marquinhos from PSG, or Raphael Varane from Real Madrid at the back, both having been linked with us recently. Declan Rice in as a defensive midfielder, and Romelu Lukaku up top.

You can read the latest on Raphael Varane to Chelsea here.

Of course, this is not football manager, and those three signings would be far from cheap, and very difficult to pull off. But this is the calibre of player and the attributes we need to come in as a new spine of this team to carry them through games like Saturday, to make them fight back quicker than in the 8oth minute of the match.
