The attention of the world is on the European Championships, but in the background the Premier League is taking shape for next season.
We know who’s been relegated, who has been promoted, the fixtures for the campaign to come, and who will be managing who – apart from at Spurs of course.
There are still some major transfers to be made of course, but apart from that, everything is settled for 2021/2022.
That’s allowed the bookmakers to make their predictions for their title favourites, and unsurprisingly Man City are top on sites like gg.bet. Nobody is ruling out Chelsea by any means however, and the Blues are neck and neck with Liverpool as second favourites pretty much across the board. At this stage, it seems bookies are struggling to separate us from the 19/20 winners.
It just goes to show how far we’ve come in the last couple of years. With a transfer ban hitting hard and Eden Hazard leaving we didn’t expect to be competing for a title for quite some time – however a surge of youth talent combined with big spending last summer means we’re in the mix once again. Thomas Tuchel has produced a very effective defence already, and with Timo Werner and Kai Havertz settled in next season expect more goals to help fire us even further up the table.
Pep Guardiola’s team were brilliant for large parts last season, but will likely struggle to keep standards that high for another campaign, opening the door for us to challenge them once again. Liverpool will be better this year, with their injured players back and some smart summer signings, and we can’t write them off by any means.
But there’s also the sneaking feeling that having won the European Cup and the Premier League, and with their front 3 looking shot last season, that the Reds could be fading a little, and might struggle to reach the heroic levels of consistency and quality necessary to win a title against Pep’s Terminator-esque City.
Chelsea are in a different position though. We’ve got the players, we’ve got the manager, we’ve got the depth – and who knows, by the end of the summer we might have Erling Haaland or Romelu Lukaku too.
Then we might really be talking about a Chelsea team looking stronger than their rivals as the new season approaches, and those 5/1 odds might start looking pretty good value if City stumble early on.
