CF Montréal Defeats New York Red Bulls, 2-1

CF Montréal (7-7-5, 26 points) late penalty-kick goal downed the New York Red Bulls (5-9-4, 19 pts), 2-1 on Saturday night at Stade Saputo.

Following two consecutive penalty kick saves by Red Bulls goalkeeper Carlos Coronel that were disallowed, Montreal’s Victor Wanyama put in the game-winner as his penalty kick slipped through Coronel’s initial save eight minutes into stoppage time.


Moments after he was subbed on, Montreal’s Ibrahim Sunusi tallied his first career MLS goal to even the match, 1-1, in the 71st minute.

In the closing minutes of first half stoppage time, Andrew Gutman drew a penalty for Patryk Klimala to convert and give New York the 1-0 lead at half.

Klimala raised his season goal total to four, snapping a four-match goal drought.

Coronel made four saves on six chances in the loss.

Daniel Royer made his first appearance of 2021 since May 29.

Tom Edwards picked up his fifth yellow card of the season, which will suspend him for Wednesday’s match against Columbus Crew SC

The Red Bulls return to Red Bull Arena for the next four matches, beginning with a two-match week against Columbus Crew SC on Wednesday then the New York Derby versus New York City FC on Saturday. Kickoff on Wednesday against Columbus is scheduled for 8 p.m. with coverage on MSG and New York Red Bulls Radio.
