Celta Vigo vs Atletico Madrid build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

For Celta Vigo, last season brought a close miss in the league as they finished eighth, five points behind what would have been the Europa Conference League qualifying spot. That would have brought their first European conquest since 2016/17 when they reached the semi-finals of the Europa League. But instead they are going without European football once again, the 13th time in 14 season that has been the case, and prepare for their next go at returning to the promised land.

Standing in their way on the first weekend, however, are defending champions Atletico Madrid who will be looking to ensure their title win last season was not a fluke. Diego Simeone’s men were excellent in stages last season but also looked as though they had lost the league in at various points, having squandered a big lead. But they managed to hold on for their first league title in seven years, ending the duopoly of Barcelona and Real Madrid.

  • Celta Vigo (vs Wolves): Dituro; Mallo, Aidoo, Fontan, Galan; Mendez, Tapia, Suarez, Nolito; Aspas, Mina.
  • Atletico Madrid (vs Feyenoord): Oblak; Perez, Gimenez, Hermoso; Carrasco, De Paul, Koke, Saul; Llorente, Lemar; Simeone.

Atletico Madrid are expected to welcome Luis Suarez back to their squad after Copa America, though it is unclear whether the Uruguayan will feature from the off or start on the bench.

Player to watch: Luis Suarez (Atletico Madrid)

Whether he starts or comes on from the bench, Suarez is sure to have an impact on Sunday’s game, as he did when facing Celta Vigo last season.

The Uruguayan netted three goals in two games against Celta Vigo last season, a small section of the 21 he would score overall in the league, en route to Atletico winning the title. It extended Suarez’s good run against Celta Vigo, having now scored in each of his last three league games vs the side (five goals).

The 34-year-old will also go into the game wanting to prove himself and get back amongst the goals quickly, having failed to score in seven matches for Uruguay over the summer, two in World Cup qualifying and five at the Copa America as his side were knocked out in the quarter-finals by Colombia. It’s Suarez’s longest run without scoring for his national side in 12 years, failing to net in 11 between June 2008 and November 2009.

But back at club level he can be a completely different beast.
