BUENOS AIRES, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) — Edinson Cavani is close to joining Boca Juniors on a free transfer, according to media reports in Argentina.
The 35-year-old, who is currently without a club after parting ways with Manchester United last month, has been offered a contract that runs until December 2023, local news outlet InfoeBae reported.
It added that Boca were seeking to accelerate negotiations in a bid to sign a deal before Argentina’s transfer deadline on August 8.
Cavani scored 19 goals in 59 matches across all competitions for Manchester United after joining the club from Paris Saint-Germain in October 2020.
News of the striker’s possible return to South American football comes days after his Uruguay national teammate Luis Suarez agreed to a four-month contract with his original club Nacional.
Both players are aiming to secure regular matches as they bid for a place in Uruguay’s 2022 FIFA World Cup squad.
The Celeste are in Group H of the showpiece tournament to be played in Qatar from November 21 to December 18.
