CAF Confederation Cup Playoffs: Enyimba, Rivers United know opponents

Nigeria’s remaining teams on the continent, Enyimba FC and Rivers United, have learnt of their opponents in the CAF Confederation Cup playoffs as they look to pick up tickets for the competition’s group stage.

Enyimba will hope to make it through to the group stage once more after they were drawn against Libyan side Al Ittihad Club. The People’s Elephant overcame Senegalese side Diambars FC 4-0 on aggregate in their only previous round, having received a bye from the first round of qualifiers.

Enyimba’s opponents Al Ittihad were knocked out of CAF Champions League by Enyimba ex-boy Anayo Iwuala and his Esperance teammates on a 1-0 aggregate. Enyimba were in the same group as another Libyan side Al Ahli Benghazi in last season’s edition of the competition.

Rivers United have dropped to the CAF Confederation Cup playoffs after losing to Sundanese club Al Hilal Omdurman 2-1 on aggregate. The Nigerian side will now face Egypt’s Al Masry for a place in the group stage.

Al Masry picked up a narrow 1-0 aggregate win over Ugandan side URA FC in the previous qualifying round to claim their place in the final qualifying round for the group stage of the competition.

Rivers United will look to book their place in the competition after losing out on a place in the CAF Confederation Cup group stages following a penalty shootout against fellow Nigerian side Enyimba FC in the 2020/21 season.

Both teams have been handed rather tough draws against Northern African clubs. The first legs will take place on November 28th, with the return fixtures set to hold on December 5th.
