BUENOS AIRES, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) — Miguel Russo has been sacked as manager of Boca Juniors after a poor start to the Argentine Primera Division season, the Buenos Aires club said on Tuesday.

He was immediately replaced by Sebastian Battaglia, a 40-year-old former Argentina international midfielder who had been working under Russo as an assistant coach.

“We thank Miguel for the professionalism and commitment that he showed throughout these 20 months of management and we wish him the best in the future. This will always be your home,” read a statement published on Boca’s official website.

The announcement came less than two days after Boca’s 1-0 defeat at Estudiantes, a result that left them 24th in the 26-team top flight standings. They have yet to win in six league outings this season.

Russo, 65, led Boca Juniors to their sixth, and most recent, Copa Libertadores title in 2007 but was sacked the same year.

He returned in December 2019 and guided the club to the Argentinian first division title three months later.
