Belgium vs Russia build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

Belgium head into this vital Group B opener in strong, if not a little unspectacular form. The Red Devils beat Croatia 1-0 in their final friendly, but only after labouring to a 1-1 draw with Greece. Crucially, Belgium picked up six points against fellow Group B side Denmark in the Nations League last year, while they twice beat Russia in qualifying for Euro 2020.

Home advantage will give Russia a boost in this match, just as it did when hosting the World Cup in 2018 where they reached the quarter-finals. Stanislav Cherchesov’s side beat Bulgaria 1-0 in their final pre-tournament friendly just after a 1-1 draw with Poland and Belgium cannot afford to take them lightly here.

  • Belgium (vs Croatia): Courtois; Alderweireld, Denayer, Vertonghen; Castagne, Dendoncker, Tielemans, Chadli; Mertens, Carrasco; Lukaku.
  • Russia (vs Bulgaria): Shunin; Barinov, Dzhikiya, Semyonov; Karavayev, Zobnin, Ozdoyev, Zhirkov; Ionov, Golovin; Dzyuba.

Axel Witsel is in the Belgium squad but is unlikely to play as he continues to recover from an ACL injury. Eden Hazard is also a doubt with his recent fitness problems, while Kevin De Bruyne could miss out after having surgery for the facial injuries he suffered in the Champions League final.

Russia made it through their pre-tournament friendlies without picking up any injuries.

Players to watch:

  • Belgium: If this supposed ‘Golden Generation’ of Belgian players are to finally fulfil their potential and lift some silverware, Romelu Lukaku needs to have the tournament of his life. The 28-year-old striker heads to the Euros after a phenomenal club campaign where he scored 24 goals in 36 Serie A appearances to help Inter lift the title, while he netted a further six times in cup competitions. With 60 goals in 93 caps, Lukaku is already 28 clear of any other player as Belgium’s all-time top scorer at a phenomenal strike rate of 0.65 goals per game. What’s more, three of those international goals have come against Russia, so Lukaku certainly knows his way around this particular opponent.
  • Russia: While he doesn’t draw the same plaudits as Lukaku, Artem Dzyuba is arguably even more revered in his home country, and he’ll pose just as much of a threat to Belgium. Now 32, Dzyuba has 29 goals to his name in 52 international caps, including eight in qualifying for this tournament. He needs just one more to draw level with Aleksandr Kerzhakov as Russia’s top goalscorer. Given his size, Dzyuba’s best qualities are his aerial prowess and ability to bully defenders in physical duels. But make no mistake, the Zenit striker is clinical. Give him half a chance and he will punish you.
