Arsenal and FC Barcelona are reportedly finalising details over the sale of Hector Bellerin, who is close to signing for the Catalan giants in the final days of the summer transfer window.
According to journalist Gerard Romero via Twitch, the two clubs are close to a breakthrough over Bellerin, who is set to leave Arsenal on a permanent deal after months of speculation, with the 27-year-old right-back set to end his 12-year spell in north London with a return to Catalonia.
Bellerin, who earns a reported £110,000-a-week at Arsenal, spent last season on loan with Real Betis and had hoped to return to the La Liga side on a permanent basis this summer, however, financial problems for the Andalusian giants have made a deal difficult to conclude, with Barcelona now set to sign the defender.
The Spanish international was born in Barcelona and came through the club’s famed La Masia academy before being signed by Arsenal as a 15-year-old, where Bellerin broke through under Arsene Wenger and became one of the Premier League’s most dangerous fullbacks before injuries and a lack of form began to take its toll.
Indeed, Bellerin is one of two players Arsenal are trying to offload before the closure of the transfer window, with Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ future still yet to be decided, though recent reports suggest that the England international is set to join a Premier League side in the coming days.
Indeed, the departure of Bellerin to Barcelona will end a significant chapter in Arsenal’s recent history given how long the defender has been at the club for, yet with the right-back returning to his boyhood club, it is a fitting transfer for the 27-year-old, who will leave north London as a well-respected player amongst fans.
Signing for Barcelona is the best outcome Bellerin could have hoped for
Bellerin might have wanted a dream return to Betis, but signing for Barcelona is arguably an even more exciting move for the defender, who will return to his former side in what could be an exciting era, on the pitch, for Xavi Hernandez’s side.
After all, Barcelona have one of the best squads in all of Europe, and with Bellerin being brought in to start at right-back, the defender could play a huge role in what could be one of the Blaugrana’s most important seasons in quite some time.
