Barcelona have confirmed that Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets have taken a pay cut in order to help the club’s financial situation and allow them to register other squad members with LaLiga.
After Gerard Pique was the first to confirm his pay cut, it was only a matter of time before the club finalised the details with the other captains as well. The players were always willing, it was just a case of sorting everything out.
These latest reductions mean that the Blaugrana can finally register Sergio Aguero to play in LaLiga Santander, although due to his injury, we won’t see him on the pitch until possibly November.
The terms of Alba and Busquets’ agreements are almost identical. The pair will earn about 25 percent less and defer some of their payments in order to alleviate the pressure on the club.
With these wage cuts tied up, Sergi Roberto is the next on the list, being the only captain not to have finalised a reduction yet. However, in the 29-year-old’s case it is a more complex process as he is also in the process of negotiating a contract extension with the club.
It is thought that his contribution to helping the club out will be reflected in his new deal, although no agreement has yet been reached. Roberto’s contract expires in June and he has scored two goals in the opening three games of 2020/21.
