Arsenal reluctant to meet Ramsdale asking price

Arsenal have been heavily linked with Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale as they seek to add cover and competition for their No.1, Bernd Leno. Recent reports suggested the Gunners had two offers for the 23-year-old turned down by the Blades, and David Ornstein of The Athletic believes Sheffield are looking for a sum in the region of £30 million. He doesn’t feel, however, that Arsenal would go that high gladly.

They are able to do so if push comes to shove, though, and Ramsdale remains their top goalkeeping target.

It’s worth remembering that Arsenal sold Emiliano Martinez to Aston Villa last summer for a reported fee of around £16m and replaced him with Alex Runarsson. Runarsson has so far failed to prove he can be relied upon, while Martinez went on to have a great season at Villa Park and be a hero for Argentina in their recent Copa America triumph. The Gunners turned to Mat Ryan, signing the Australian from Brighton and Hove Albion on loan for the second half of last season, but Ryan has joined Real Sociedad permanently since.
