Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal were linked with Raheem Sterling over the weekend in the British media, and now there is speculation in the Spanish press that Barcelona want to sign the Manchester City attacking midfielder.

Arsenal interest

The Daily Star reported over the weekend that Arsenal are monitoring the situation of Sterling, who can operate as an attacking midfielder or as a winger.

Talks between the England international and City over a new deal are going slowly.

Arsenal manager Arteta worked with Sterling when he was a coach at City, and the Spaniard is keen on bringing the former Liverpool star to the Emirates Stadium.

We covered the report here on HITC Sport.

Barcelona join race

However, it now seems that Arsenal are not the only club who have an eye on Sterling, who has won the Premier League title thrice with City.

Mundo Deportivo are now reporting that Barcelona want to sign Sterling from City in the January transfer window.

The Spanish giants were interested in the 26-year-old – described as “spectacular” and “world class” by Liverpool right-back and England international teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold in The Guardian in September 2021 – in the summer transfer window and could make a move for him in January.

Arsenal or Barcelona?

Barcelona’s financial problems have been well documented, and the team are also struggling on the pitch under manager Ronald Koeman at the moment.

However, Barcelona are one of the biggest and most historic clubs in the world who are rebuilding.

The La Liga club also play in the Champions League on a regular basis and are always among the favourites for the league title in Spain.
