BUENOS AIRES, March 5 (Xinhua) — Argentina advanced to the Davis Cup finals by completing a 4-0 whitewash of the Czech Republic in their qualifier here on Saturday.
Having started the day with a 2-0 advantage after Friday’s singles, the hosts took an unassailable lead when Maximo Gonzalez and Horacio Zeballos defeated Jiri Lehecka and Tomas Machac 6-4, 6-4.
Federico Coria completed the rout by overcoming Vit Kopriva 6-2, 6-4 in their reverse singles rubber.
On Saturday, Sebastian Baez and Diego Schwartzman gave the hosts an ideal start by beating Jiri Lehecka and Tomas Machac, respectively.
The result guaranteed Argentina one of 16 places in the Davis Cup group stage, to be played across four cities in September.
The top eight teams will then progress to the knockout phase to be held at a yet-to-be-determined venue in November.
