Week five of the 2021 Chinese Super League season is over for the majority of teams in the Suzhou-based Group B, so here’s a round-up of all the action ahead of the international break.
Due to international call-ups, Beijing Guoan’s fixture with Hebei has been postponed, leaving just three matches for the rest of the group in week five.
Shanghai Port 3-0 Dalian Professional
There were a couple of surprise results in Group B this week, but Shanghai Port’s matchup against Dalian Professional certainly didn’t provide one.
The Group B leaders put on a clinic against the struggling north-eastern club, putting three goals past their opponents with very little in the way of competition.
Lü Wenjun broke the deadlock after less than 20 minutes of play, with Brazilian star Oscar extending his side’s lead 20 minutes later.
Shanghai Port dominated the match and had an impressive 21 shots on goal with nine of them on target, almost as many total shots Dalian had throughout the match.
Oscar piled on the disappointment with a stoppage time penalty, seeing Shanghai Port remain atop Group B and tied for points with Group A’s Shandong Taishan.
Tianjin Jinmen Tiger 2-1 Wuhan
The second of three matches in Group B saw Tianjin Jinmen Tiger finally claim their first victory of the 2021 season, sending the plummeting Wuhan to the bottom of the group.
The problems began for Wuhan when Stéphane Mbia was shown red just 11 minutes into the match, leaving them with just ten men for the majority of the match.
Yang Zihao opened the scored just a minute before the half-time break, giving Tianjin plenty of confidence. Wuhan did pull things level, however, with Zhao Honglüe four minutes into the second half.
It wasn’t enough to claim a point for Wuhan, with Jules Iloki scoring his second goal of the season in the 69th minute. Wuhan had no further answers and Tianjin finished with their first three points of the campaign, dragging them away from the bottom of the Group B standings.
Changchun Yatai 1-0 Shanghai Shenhua
After three consecutive 0-0 draws, Changchun Yatai claimed their second victory of the season as they overcame a Shanghai Shenhua side that needed two late goals to salvage draws in their past two matches.
Shenhua were the dominant team throughout the match, with the majority of chances and possession, but it was Changchun Yatai that took advantage and maintained their unbeaten run.
Brazilian playmaker Serginho found himself taken down in the penalty box, leaving a loose ball for Wang Peng to simply tap into the back of the net in the 82nd minute of the match. The result sees Changchun leapfrog Shenhua into second place in Group B entering the international break, continuing their impressive return to the Chinese top tier.
