The Chinese Super League is now on a month-long pause due to the international break, so here’s a round-up of all week five fixtures from the Guangzhou-based Group A.
Guangzhou FC’s week five fixture with Henan Songshan Longmen was postponed due to international call-ups, leaving just three matches across the rest of the group.
Shenzhen 2-2 Shandong Taishan
The first of three fixtures kicked off in exciting fashion, with a real back-and-forth tie between Shenzhen and Shandong Taishan.
Shenzhen could argue that they deserved more than the solitary point earned during the match, having dominated in chances, shots on target and even possession of the ball throughout the 90 minutes, but it was Shandong that opened the scoring.
Marouane Fellaini scored after 29 minutes, giving Shandong a 1-0 lead that lasted until just one minute after the half-time break. Dai Wai Tsun scored in the 46th minute and it was these just these two players that got on the score sheet in this match.
Fellaini converted from the penalty spot six minutes after Dai’s equaliser, but the Hong Kong-born midfielder scored once again in the 63rd minute to keep his side level. Neither could break the deadlock thereafter and Shenzhen will have left the match feeling they could have done more against the group leaders.
Guangzhou City 0-0 Cangzhou Mighty Lions
After suffering their first defeat of the season last week, Guangzhou City managed to hold onto a tight 0-0 draw against Group A bottom dwellers Cangzhou Mighty Lions.
Both teams had fairly similar shots on target, with Guangzhou City creating the majority of chances with their higher amount of possession, but neither could find the back of the net and both teams ended week five with a drab 0-0 draw.
Qingdao 1-0 Chongqing Liangjiang Athletic
This match looked destined to go the same way as the previous Group A fixture, with both Qingdao and Chonqing Liangjiang Athletic held to a 0-0 score line as the regulation 90 passed.
Liu Jian, however, provided a moment of magic as he latched onto a free kick deep into stoppage time to snatch victory away from Chongqing.
VAR was called into action to determine if Liu Jian had been offside as the free kick was taken, but he was deemed to have remained narrowly onside and was able to sneak in behind the defence and slide into the path of the ball – beating goalkeeper Deng Xiaofeng and claiming all three points from the coastal club.
