BUENOS AIRES, July 18 (Xinhua) — Ten-man Colon withstood a late River Plate onslaught to secure a 2-1 away victory in their Argentine Primera Division season opener on Sunday.
Rodrigo Aliendro put Colon ahead with an early strike but the visitors suffered a setback when Gonzalo Piovi was shown a straight red card for a reckless challenge in the 14th minute.
Despite their numerical disadvantage, Colon doubled their lead when Facundo Farias set up Yeiler Goez just after the half-hour mark.
River had 75 percent of possession and 21 shots on goal to the visitors’ five, but they could not find a way past Colon goalkeeper Ignacio Chicco until the 91st minute, when Matias Suarez headed in from close range following a corner.
In June, Colon secured the first major trophy in their 116-year history by beating Racing Club 3-0 in the final of Argentina’s Professional League Cup.
Earlier on Sunday, Huracan won 2-1 at home to Defensa y Justicia and Arsenal Sarandi were held to a 1-1 home draw by San Lorenzo.
