The Women’s World Cup 2019 is underway with 24 countries battling to be crowned the winners of the eighth edition of the competition. Teams in Group D are one of the most competitive but some teams have a better chance of leaving the group than others.
Group D standings
Group D consists of Argentina, England, Japan and Scotland. England is in the first position with six points after winning their first two matches, followed by Japan with four points. Argentina is third with one point while Scotland sits at the bottom with no single point. We take a look at the four teams to determine the team that could qualify to the quarterfinals.
England is currently ranked on position three in FIFA World Ranking with 2049 points. England have won five out of their last nine matches and lost four times. A goal from Jodie Taylor gave them a 1-0 win against Argentina in their last match.
England are strong in defense with a number of talented players whose presence could help them win the trophy. Some players, like a highly skilled goalkeeper Vanina Correa, who has performed incredible saves in a number of matches, will be crucial during the tournament.
Another player, Toni Duggan, will add to England’s striking power after recovering from a thigh injury. She will partner with Jodie Taylor who is one of England’s first-class strikers.
Japan have won four of their last nine matches in the Women’s World Cup while they only lost once and drawn four times. Japan are currently ranked in position seven with 1991 points in FIFA World Ranking. They are currently in second place in Group D with four points.
On March 5, Japan and England went head to head but the match didn’t go well for the former champs, as they lost 0-3 to England. In 2011 Japan won their first World Cup championship by beating the USA in penalties.
The Argentinian team have been included in the toughest group in this year’s tournament. They will need to show their A-game in order to survive.
Argentina are currently ranked in position 37 in FIFA ranking with 1626 points, while they are second last in Group D with one point. They have played six matches this season, winning only once and drawn once with Japan.
Argentina have not performed well in their last few matches. Coach Carlos Borello will need to improve on his team’s defense and attack to earn the three crucial points to progress to the quarterfinals.
Scotland is currently in position 20 in the FIFA ranking with 1812 points. In Group D, they close the list without any point. They have won twice in their last six matches in the Women’s International Friendlies.
On June 14 the Scots went head to head with Japan, which didn’t go well for Scotland. Japan beat them 2-1, the defeat which left them on the bottom of the group.
Scotland’s game has been uneven as they show good performance in one game and disappoint in the next. In their last five games, they have lost twice and drew once in a home match with Chile 1-1. Their encounter with Jamaica on May 28 ended with a victory 3-2, however they do not have a high chance of leaving the group in this year’s World Cup.
Who will proceed to the quarterfinals?
In all of their previous World Cup appearances, England made it through the group stage on every occasion. Their fate will be known on Wednesday when they take on Japan in a must-win match.
Japan looked more effective in attack when they beat Scotland 2-1 after goals from Mana Iwabuchi and Yuika Sugasawa on Friday. We expect them to continue to pose a challenge to their rivals in the battle for quarterfinals.
Based on the above performance history, I will bet on England to emerge at the top of Group D. They are in great form and show a continuous good performance in the field, as opposed to their opponents in the group.
