Captaincy this week is quite tricky with a lot of good options. Jesus is in form, Salah plays Man United against whom he’s on the scoresheet mostly, and last week’s popular captain choice Haaland is still a popular option even though he didn’t score last week. Let’s look at who tops our FPL Gameweek 3 captaincy metrics.
The metrics had a 30/38 record last season and has a 2/2 returns record this season. Do follow the man behind the metrics @AK_FPL1(Do follow him on Twitter)

FPL GW3 Captaincy poll ~ Wisdom Of the Crowd
Jesus tops the captaincy poll with nearly 40% of the votes this week, he returned 19 points against Leicester in GW2 and plays Bournemouth who conceded 4 goals against Man City last week. Salah is the second most popular captain choice this week with 35% votes. Haaland is the third most captaincy choice this week in a somewhat tricky fixture away at Newcastle. KDB who outscored Haaland in GW2 is the fourth most popular choice and Kane comes fifth in the captaincy poll for GW3. The five players going into metrics this week are Jesus, Salah, Kane, Haaland and KDB.
Underlying Numbers of the FPL Gameweek 3 Captain picks
Jesus is the only player on the list to cross 2.0 xG in the first two games after a stellar performance against Leicester. Haaland is closely behind with an xG of 1.80 and tops the big chances chart. Salah surprisingly has an xG of less than 1.0 from the first two games but surprisingly has created more chances than KDB. But with Nunez out Salah should be back racking up the big chances and xG. KDB is the last in terms of xG which is known as he’s more of a creator and scores from low xG chances.
Underlying Numbers of the Candidate’s Teams
Man City top the team stats with an xG of 3.98, Arsenal are close to Man City and play the team Man City played in GW2. Liverpool have had more shots but have not scored freely in the first two games. Spurs are last in terms of xG after a tricky fixture vs Chelsea in GW2.
Fixture Difficulty of the candidate team in FPL GW3
KDB, Salaah and Haaland all have the same odds of scoring one goal and scoring 2.5+ goals this week. Jesus/Kane are also not far behind with a 38% odds of scoring 2.5+ goals this week. The closeness in the odds of 2.5+ goals this week tells how tight captaincy is this week.
Projections Rank of our FPL Gameweek 3 Captain Picks
Salah tops the projected points return and Kane is close behind missing out by just 0.1. kdb and Haaland also have a points projection of 6.0 plus.
Conclusion – Final Rank from our FPL Gameweek 3 Captaincy metric analysis
Haaland comfortably tops the metrics thanks to a great fixture and team attack rank. Salah is second in the metrics. KDB is third with a CRF of 11, Jesus is fourth with a CRF of 12. Kane comes last this week in the metrics with a CRF of 14.
