21/22 was a tough season for Leeds. A 17th place finish was only secured on the last day, loss of manager and icon Bielsa, and a general loss of trust with the board and the club. The mighty Whites look to have reached a real turning point in the club’s PL return, however, with new man Marsch at the helm, a new style to implement, as well as a summer of real change.

The Yorkshire Pirlo leaving to join title favorites will be certain to leave a big pair of shoes to fill, whilst Leeds also have lost their most creative and prized asset in Raphinha, thankfully not to a certain London club in blue. Leeds got busy early in the window with Aaronson, Kristensen, Roca, Adams, and Sinisterra coming into Elland Road in time for Pre-season with more possibly to come for Leeds (targeting a left-back and striker). There is lots to be optimistic about for the 22/23 season.

Whilst not as explosive or impressive as some Leeds fans may have hoped, Leeds’ pre-season has been a good one and a useful one. All the new signings able to pick up plenty of minutes and some of our young talent and injury issues have been able to adjust to first-team football once again. Performance wise it’s been a mixed bag, starting strong with a 4-0 win over Blackpool in the absence of most new signings and internationals, and concluding with some lesser impressive results against Palace and Villa. Glimpses of quality and the style bearing fruit, underlined by a lack of creativity in the final third and a real danger of being countered is the tale of the tapes so far. Leeds have one game left against Cagliari in order to make things gel.

Leeds Pre-season Results

  • Leeds United 4 (Koch 10’, Firpo 22’, Rodrigo 30’, Joseph 85’) – Blackpool 0
  • Leeds United 2 (James 23’, Gelhardt 25’) – Brisbane Roar 1 (Knowles 40’)
  • Leeds United 0 (Meslier pen save) – Aston Villa 1 (Ings pen 63)
  • Leeds United 1 (Rodrigo 56’ pen) – Crystal Palace 1 (Mateta 67’)
  • Leeds United – Cagliari To be played

Leeds Injuries/Absences

Leeds have not come out of the 21/22 season moving into pre-season unscathed, unfortunately. Dallas and Ayling are both ruled out of considerable amounts of time to begin the season, due to injuries sustained last season. Firpo picked up an injury in our pre-season friendly against Blackpool (sidelined for 8 weeks), whilst Sinisterra’s knock against Palace in our most recent game is yet to be known the severity of. Dan James also has a one-game sentence unserved after seeing straight red at the end of the last campaign.

Leeds Fixtures

Leeds have been blessed with one of the more favorable set of opening fixtures this season, playing 4 of the worst attacking sides in the league last time out (Everton, Wolves, Brighton, and Southampton). Leeds also have a newly promoted side Forest at Elland Road, as well as a return to the Brentford community stadium to attempt to repeat their end-of-season antics from the 21/22 season. Then the big games include a fiery home fixture where we host Chelsea and an even fierier away fixture in Manchester.

Leeds avoid playing any real title contenders in this period and thus it is an important and defining set of fixtures to open the campaign. And more importantly perhaps a great set of fixtures to target for FPL.

Leeds System/Formation

Leeds under Marsch look to utilize the Red Bull system of pressing in a 4231 formation (sometimes a 4222) with 2 holding mids, attacking fullbacks, and inside wingers. The system entails a high, trigger-based, press where the whole team looks to squeeze the ball into areas of the pitch where they can turn it over. Before attacking with speed in a narrow formation, fullbacks provide the width, whilst remaining close to one another in order to quickly press following a turnover.

Leeds Set piece Takers:

  • Pens = Bamford/Rodrigo, Gelhardt
  • Corners = Aaronson/Harrison, Greenwood
  • Free Kicks = Aaronson/Harrison, Greenwood

Best Leeds FPL Assets:

Best Leeds FPL Assets ~ Meslier

GK: Meslier (4.5) has been in the net every game since Leeds’ promotion to the premier league. Averaging 3.7 saves a game and picking up 16 clean sheets over the 2 seasons, Meslier has real scope for points scoring if Leeds can sure up their defence from last season.

Defender

Best Leeds FPL Assets ~ Kristensen

Kristensen (5.0) has come through the door as one of Leeds’ new arrivals this summer and has looked to hit the ground running in the absence of Ayling and Dallas as right-back options.  With 7 goals and 4 assists in the Austrian League, last season and a starting place as good as nailed down the Dane could be an excellent FPL asset IF he can apply his trade to the PL.

Midfielder

Best Leeds FPL Assets ~ Harrison (6.0)

Harrison (6.0) has been somewhat overshadowed in his time at Leeds by the Brazilian on the other wing, but the hard-working Englishman has proved a useful player for Leeds with 16 goals and 11 assists over the last 2 seasons. Harrison has adapted excellently to the new system and with less of the ball going through the right wing in Raphinha’s absence, he could look to improve on his already consistent, but not incredible scoring.

Forward:

Best Leeds FPL Assets ~ Greenwood

Greenwood (4.5) finds himself in over ¼ of FPL teams so far this season. Why? Well, the budget attacker coming in at 4.5 allows managers to spend more on their team elsewhere, leaving Greenwood on the bench as cover. And with Greenwood set to pick up minutes in this Leeds side, albeit not starts, he allows for the odd point score if he would be required to play.

Differential FPL Pick from Leeds

Differential FPL Pick from Leeds ~ Aaronson

At only 0.5% ownership Aaronson (5.5) is as differential a MID option as any. But is he worth having in FPL? The young American has picked up plenty of minutes in pre-season and following his £30 million arrival in the summer is likely to start as a 10 or a winger for Marsch. If the creative player can turn his work rate into returns, he could prove a great choice over the likes of Neto and Bailey in that price point.

Leeds FPL Assets ~ Ones to Watch:

Leeds FPL Assets ~ Ones to Watch: Sinisterra (6.5)

Sinisterra (6.5) and Firpo (4.5) both could be set to miss the beginning of the campaign through injury, but when fit could be an excellent FPL option in your side. Gelhardt (5.5) also could prove a useful budget forward option if he can get consistent minutes.

Final Verdict on Leeds from an FPL Perspective

Leeds in 22/23 are unknown package both in and out of FPL. Having lost once FPL star Raphinha, it is uncertain as to who will step up and break into anyone’s teams this season, if anyone at all. However, there is certainly positives to be found; under Marsch last season Leeds managed to keep a record of 1.08 p/g scored and 1.58 p/g conceded, compared to Bielsa’s 1.11 p/g scored and 2.1 p/g conceded. If Leeds can build on this improvement into the season, along with a favourable early fixture run, they could prove to be an early differential dream for any FPL team.
