Bennedict Mathurin 2022 NBA Draft Profile

The 2022 NBA Draft will be an important event for teams to build for their future. Here is the Bennedict Mathurin 2022 NBA Draft Profile.

Bennedict Mathurin Background

Position: Guard/Forward

Size: 6-foot-6, 204 pounds

Class: Sophomore

School: Arizona

2021-22 stats: 17.7 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.0 steals, 0.3 blocks per game, 45% FG, 36.9% 3FG, 76.4% FT

Mathurin improved in most statistical categories during his last collegiate season. He chose to go pro after displaying his improvement.

Out of the NBA Latin American Academy, Mathurin was a four-star prospect who chose to sign with Arizona. As a freshman, he averaged 10.8 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. The Wildcats were ineligible for the 2021 NCAA Tournament. Mathurin showed his development as a sophomore when he averaged 17.7 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. His play helped Arizona have a great regular season and the team was able to reach the Sweet Sixteen of the 2022 NCAA Tournament.

After a great season for Mathurin and the Wildcats, he decided to go to the next level. He is a projected lottery pick in the 2022 NBA Draft.

Bennedict Mathurin Strengths

Mathurin knows how to finish near the basket. In transition, he runs the floor well and can throw down some highlight dunks. Even on set plays he can get to the rim. He showed the ability to finish through contact and over bigger defenders. His finishing at the basket is already good enough for the NBA.

He has a good blend of size and athleticism for a wing. At 6-foot-6 and 204 pounds, he’ll need to add a little weight, but has a good starting frame for the NBA. He also has a nice 6-foot-9 wingspan. His athleticism is evident in his finishing, as he can get up high and throw dunks down hard. He also has solid speed in transition and the halfcourt.

His shooting has been solid for the most part. He demonstrated a solid mid-range game at Arizona and hit almost 80 percent of his free throws at the collegiate level. While his 3-point shooting percentage did decrease during the 2021-22 season, Mathurin has shown to be a good shooter from deep off the catch.

Bennedict Mathurin Weaknesses

Mathurin has trouble creating offense for himself and others. He doesn’t beat his man off the dribble with enough regularity or set up his own shot. Because of this, he doesn’t open up the defense and get teammates open looks a lot. He can give a team offense, he just won’t be the one often generating it.

He needs to show more consistent effort on the defensive end of the floor and when rebounding. There are times when he ball watches or when his man can drive by him, even when he has the physical advantage. Moving his feet and using his length will help, but he needs to be more engaged. Playing team defense will also be an emphasis for him.

His shot selection can also improve. Mathurin takes too many contested shots after the defense funnels towards him. He needs to pull up before they swarm him or find the open man. If he can take better shots, his shooting percentages could improve a little at the NBA level.
