BMW R1200 GS recall also impacts the R1250 GS models. The issue is due to the Cardan shaft that can impact rideability…

BMW Motorrad have announced a ‘Service Campaign’ for nearly 4,40,000 total units comprising of popular R 1200 GS & R 1250 GS bikes produced between 2013 and 2021.

The problem affecting these over 4 Lakh units, shared by BMW, is related to damage that can be caused by the Cardan Shaft that can result in a loss of drive of the vehicle.

The German publication – Motorradalso claims that the same issue also plagues the BMW R 1200 RT and R 1250 RT sport-tourers models as well, built between the same timeline of 2013 and 2021.

They further explain that the problem has been aggravated due to the design of the bike – especially the angle of the swingarm between the Cardan Tunnel and the rear axle gearbox, as well as the longer suspension travel on the GS’ compared to the RT models.

Of course, BMW Motorrad will offer this modification free of charge and have suggested to these customers in particular that there is no need for any urgent appointments to rectify the issue.  They have advised that the customer can relax and should wait for their next scheduled services appointment to get the necessary retrofitting done.

Finally, there are whispers suggesting that BMW Motorrad have been aware of this particular issue for a while, and since October 2021, have tweaked the designs of the newly-produced R 1200 GS and R 1250 GS ADVs with the required ventilation hole.
