Whether or not it should be happening, it’s happening.
The exhibition match between boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr. and YouTuber Logan Paul has been announced for June 6 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. The bout will be televised via Showtime pay-per-view.
The June 6 date is a day later than the previously reported June 5 date. The delay means the exhibition will no longer directly compete with the lightweight title fight between Teofimo Lopez and George Kambosos Jr. scheduled for June 5.
Among the fights on the undercard will be a rematch between Badou Jack and Jean Pascal, per Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix. Pascal defeated Jack, a former WBC super-middleweight title holder, via split decision in Dec. 2019.
The Mayweather-Paul fight had been initially scheduled for Feb. 20, but was postponed indefinitely. Under the previously reported terms of the fight, Mayweather will be required to weigh in under 160 pounds, while Paul can come in under 190 pounds.
Floyd Mayweather is the obvious favorite
The last time the 44-year-old Mayweather entered the ring was on New Year’s Eve 2018, when he defeated Japanese kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa via first-round TKO in an exhibition match. His last professional bout was a 10th round TKO of UFC star Conor McGregor in 2017, improving his career record to 50-0.
Paul’s boxing experience consists of two matches, one exhibition and one professional, against fellow YouTuber KSI.
It goes without saying that Mayweather is the overwhelming favorite to win. Even Paul’s own brother Jake — who is coming off a first-round knockout of ex-UFC fighter Ben Askren — said the YouTuber is “f***ed” and that the match is a “terrible idea.”
Of course, a competitive boxing match isn’t the primary goal here. That would be money, and both Mayweather and Paul provide plenty of reason to believe this even will be among the most lucrative in combat sports history. No boxer dominates the list of highest-grossing pay-per-view events like Mayweather, while Paul carries a massive social media following into the fight.
