Senegal will face Uganda on July 5 in the Round of 16 match in 2019 AFCON at Cairo International Stadium.
Africa’s No.1 comes into this game upbeat having won two of their three group stage matches. The Lions of Teranga thrashed Kenya’s Harambee Stars 3-0 in their last group match on Monday, to book a direct ticket to the final 16. Uganda on the other hand, fell to Egypt 0-2 on match 3 but advanced to the knockouts after emerging second in Group A with four points.
With slightly more than two weeks remaining to the final, the few surviving teams are in a rush to secure maximum points and avoid being kicked out of one of Africa’s top tournaments.
Senegal have lived up to their No.1 African team title after showing impressive performance since the beginning of the tournament. But, while the Cranes might appear to stand no chance against the finesse of the Teranga Lions, make no mistake as the Sebastien Desabre’s side could pull off an upset and surprise Africa’s football giants.
Who do you think will carry the day when the two sides meet on Friday? We take a quick look at the two teams to get an idea of who will emerge the winner.
Senegal were kicked out of the 2017 AFCON tournament after they lost 5-4 against Morocco. They are currently among the best performing teams in Africa. The Lions of Teranga are 22nd in the world with 1515 points in FIFA ranking. Aliou Cisse’s side have won four of their last five matches. Their only loss was a group stage match against Algeria on June 27 which ended 1-0.

Senegal will be going into Friday’s game with high hopes coming from a 3-0 win against the Harambee Stars on Monday.
Uganda is ranked 80th in FIFA world rankings with 1299 points. The Cranes have never won the AFCON tournament. They will be making their second successive attempt in the tournament this year after they were knocked out of the group stage in the 2017 AFCON competitions, following a 1-0 loss to Egypt.
In 2012, Sebastien Desabre’s side beat Kenya 2-1 to win their 13th CECAFA Tusker Senior Challenge Cup in Uganda. The Cranes have recorded poor performance in the last few matches winning only twice out of five games. They lost to Egypt 2-0 in their last match on June 30.

Will it be Senegal or Uganda?
Based on the above statistics, Senegal have an upper hand against the Uganda Cranes. The Lions of Teranga are in good form as opposed to their East African opponents. The odds are that Senegal will win on Friday. Sebastien Desabre’s side have appeared to struggle in their last few matches and will find it difficult to stop Africa’s top-ranked team in Cairo.
The Teranga Lions defense is solid and backed by a lethal frontline with Sadio Mane, Liverpool’s top player. The Cranes will need to up their game if they dream of beating Senegal.
