FIBA daily updates: 2022 EuroBasket and AmeriCup scores

Check out the action from Day 6 of 2022 FIBA EuroBasket

With the 2023 World Cup Qualifiers currently paused until the next window of play opens in November, FIBA action now shifts to national competitions. The 2022 EuroBasket tournament to determine Europe’s basketball champion runs from Sept. 1-18. The 2022 AmeriCup for FIBA teams in the Americas runs from Sept. 2-11.


Sept. 6 results

EuroBasket

Greece 99, Ukraine 79

A dominant showing by Giannis Antetokounmpo keeps Greece (4-0) undefeated in Group C play after a win Tuesday against Ukraine (3-1). Antetokounmpo, who missed yesterday’s win vs. Great Britain, needed just 27 minutes to register 41 points (13-for-18 FG; 13-for-16 FT), nine rebounds, two assists and a steal. Antetokounmpo’s big showing was aided by the play of Dallas Mavericks two-way guard Tyler Dorsey (13 points) and former NBA guard Nick Calathes (13 points, five rebounds, seven assists). Greece plays Estonia at 11 a.m. ET on Sept. 8.

Turkey 78, Belgium 63

Turkey (3-1) defeated Belgium (2-2) behind Houston Rockets center Alperen Sengun’s dominant performance in Group A action. Sengun finished with 24 points, eight rebounds, six assists and a block and shot 52% (10-for-19) as well. Cleveland Cavaliers forward Cedi Osman (eight points, four rebounds and two assists) and Philadelphia 76ers swingman Furkan Korkmaz (16 points and five rebounds) each played well, too. Turkey plays Spain at 7:30 a.m. ET on Sept. 7.

France 81, Bosnia and Herzegovina, 68

France (3-1) stays at the top of Group B after a win against Bosnia and Herzegovina (2-2). Led by the New York Knicks’ Evan Fournier (14 points) and the Minnesota Timberwolves’ Rudy Gobert (11 points, 12 rebounds, two blocks), France outscored Bosnia and Herzegovina 29-18 in the fourth-quarter to seal the win. Portland Trail Blazers center Jusuf Nurkic had 14 points and 10 rebounds and former NBA swingman Dzanan Musa scored 14 points in a losing effort. France plays Slovenia at 11:15 a.m. ET on Sept. 7.

Spain 82, Montenegro 65

Spain (3-1) took down Montenegro (2-2) on Tuesday to keep pace with Turkey for the No. 1 spot in Group A. The Hernangomez brothers dominated for Spain with Willy Hernangomez of the New Orleans Pelicans (14 points, 13 rebounds) and Juancho Hernangomez of the Toronto Raptors (six points, five rebounds) providing muscle inside as Spain rolled to a 53-31 halftime lead and mostly coasted from there. Spain plays Turkey at 7:30 a.m. ET on Sept. 7.

Lithuania 87, Hungary 64

Lithuania (1-3) notches its first win in Group B play by keeping Hungary (0-4) winless. Sacramento Kings All-Star big man Domantas Sabonis (19 points, eight rebounds, four assists) and New Orleans Pelicans center Jonas Valanciunas (21 points, eight rebounds) pounded away on Hungary as Lithuania had 18 second-chance points in its blowout win. Lithuania looks to continue its momentum when it plays Bosnia and Herzegovina at 8:30 a.m. ET on Sept. 7.

Finland 98, Czech Republic 88

Finland (2-2) pulled away in the second half in a close game against Czech Republic (1-3) to keep pace in Group D play. Utah Jazz forward Lauri Markkanen was strong for Finland, finishing with 34 points, 10 rebounds and several key plays in the fourth quarter to seal the victory. Finland plays The Netherlands at 8 a.m. ET on Sept. 8.

Serbia 89, Israel 78

Serbia (4-0) remained undefeated in Group D play by beating Israel (2-2). MVP Nikola Jokic went off for 29 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists to keep his team unbeaten and pick up the win. For Israel, Wizards guard Deni Avdija pumped in 14 points. Serbia plays Poland at 2:50 p.m. ET on Sept. 8.

Bulgaria 92, Georgia 80

Bulgaria (1-3) picked up its first victory in Group A play by defeating Georgia (1-3). In a losing effort, Pacers center Goga Bitadze filled the stat sheet up with 21 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Bulgaria will play Belgium at 10:05 a.m. on Sept. 7.

Italy 81, Croatia 76

Italy (2-2) took down Croatia (2-2) to keep pace thus far in Group C play. Utah Jazz forward Bojan Bogdanovic erupted for 27 points in the loss, while Clippers center Ivica Zubac added 13 points and Suns center Dario Saric added 10 for Croatia. Italy will play Great Britain at 2:50 p.m. on Sept. 8.

Slovenia 88, Germany 80

Slovenia (3-1) defeated previously undefeated Germany (3-1) in a close contest in Group B play. Dallas Mavericks’ Luka Doncic had a big game with 36 points on 56% shooting with 10 rebounds and 4 assists to help lift the Slovenian team. Chicago Bulls’ Goran Dragic also aided in the win with 18 points, 2 rebounds and 3 assists. Slovenia plays France at 11:15 a.m. ET on Sept. 7

AmeriCup

USA 101, Venezuela 49

USA (2-1) defeated Venezuela (2-1) behind a big performance from current G-League player Craig Sword. Sword pumped in 19 points to lift USA to the top of Group C. USA will play Puerto Rico on Sept. 8.

Puerto Rico 76, Virgin Islands 73

Puerto Rico (2-1) took down the Virgin Islands (0-3) in a very close contest. Former NBA guard Tremont Waters scored 17 points in the victory. Puerto Rico will face the United States on Sept. 8

Argentina 90, Dominican Republic 78

Argentina (3-0) defeated the Dominican Republic (1-2) to remain undefeated in Group B play. Utah Jazz forward Leando Bolmaro scored 9 points, while NBA free agent Facundo Campazzo notched 17. Argentina will play Venezuela on Sept. 8

EuroBasket

Poland 85, Israel 76

Poland (2-1) held off Israel (2-1) with a dominant game inside the paint to hand Israel its first lost in Group D play. Washington Wizards forward Deni Avdija finished with three points, eight rebounds and three assists while A.J. Slaughter led Poland to victory with and 24 points and five assists. Israel plays Serbia at 3 p.m. ET on Sept. 6.

Croatia 73, Estonia 70

Croatia (2-1) prevailed in a close contest in Group C play as winless Estonia (0-3) tried to surge to victory in the 4th quarter. Phoenix Suns big man Dario Saric powered Croatia to victory with 15 points, 12 rebounds and three assists while LA Clippers center Ivica Zubac, Utah Jazz forward Bojan Bogdanovic and free-agent forward Mario Hezonja each added 17 points. Estonia had a chance to tie the game at the buzzer, but Kristian Kullamae’s 3-pointer missed. Croatia takes on Italy at 9 a.m. ET on Sept. 6.

Greece 93, Great Britain 77

Greece remained undefeated in Group C play (3-0) after a convincing win against Great Britain (0-3) today. Neither Giannis Antetokounmpo nor his brother, Kostas, played on Monday while Thanasis Antetokounmpo had five points and four rebounds in 14 minutes. Dallas Mavericks two-way player Tyler Dorsey finished with five points, three assists and a steal for Greece while former NBA player Georgios Papagiannis had 17 points and six rebounds. Greece next faces Ukraine at 11 a.m. ET on Sept. 6

Serbia 100, Finland 70

Serbia (3-0) continues to lead Group D with an undefeated record after a resounding win against Finland (1-2). Reigning two-time Kia MVP Nikola Jokic powered Serbia with a 13-point, 14-rebound, seven-assists performance. Utah Jazz forward Lauri Markkanen finished with 18 points, seven rebounds and five assists in defeat for Finland. Serbia plays Israel at 3 p.m. ET on Sept. 6.

Ukraine 84, Italy 73

Ukraine (3-0) still remains on top of the Group C standings after defeating Italy (1-2). Free-agent guard Sviatoslav Mikhailiuk had a stand out performance with 25 points, four rebounds and three assists. Veteran NBA center Alex Len, who played for the Sacramento Kings in 2021-22, finished with three points and 11 rebounds in 21 minutes to help pace Ukraine’s victory. Ukraine will play Greece at 11 a.m. ET on Sept. 6.

 

AmeriCup

Canada 62, Colombia 61

Canada (2-1) outlasted Colombia (1-2) with an intense fourth-quarter finish to pick up their second straight win in Group A phase play. Toronto Raptors guard Dalano Banton, the 46th pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, was solid for Canada as he had 20 points, five rebounds, five assists and one steal in the win.

USA 88, Panama 58

Former Miami Heat guard Norris Cole lead team USA (1-1) to an easy victory over Panama (0-3) with a game-high 17 points, and also added 4 assists. Current G-League player Craig Sword also poured in 11 points to help the team prevail.

Brazil 76, Uruguay 66

Brazil (3-1) outlasted Uruguay (0-3) to maintain their perfect record. Trail Blazers forward Didi Louzada had 5 points and 5 rebounds in the win.
