SAN DIEGO, Calif. – San Diego Wave Fútbol Club’s newly-acquired Jaedyn Shaw has been called up to the United States Youth National Team to compete in the 2022 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica from Aug. 10-28. San Diego Wave FC announced the 17-year-old midfielder on July 18 to her first professional contract, running through 2023.
With three goals in four UNYNT career appearances, Shaw is one of two professionals named to the U-20 World Cup roster. This marks the most professionals ever for a U.S. team at a FIFA youth Women’s World Cup.
Shaw recently scored two goals in three matches to help her USYNT squad win the Sud Ladies Cup in Aubagne, France. At the age of 15, Shaw was invited to train with the French first-division club, Paris Saint-Germain FC. At the youth level, the up-and-coming midfielder played for FC Dallas and most recently for Solar Soccer Club.
The U.S. opens the tournament on Thursday, Aug. 11, against Ghana at Estadio Morera Soto (1 p.m. ET; FS2). The teams last met in the U-20 WWC in 2016, a 1-1 draw in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. The U-20s will then face the Netherlands for the first time in a U-20 World Cup on Sunday, Aug. 14, at Estadio Nacional (7 p.m. ET; FS1) and finish the group stage against Japan on Wednesday, Aug. 17, back at Estadio Morera Soto (7 p.m. ET; FS2).
The top two finishers in each of the four groups will advance to the quarterfinals, to be held on Saturday, Aug. 20, and Sunday, Aug. 21. The winners of those matches will advance to the semifinals on Thursday, Aug. 25. The Championship Game and Third-Place Match will be played on Sunday, Aug. 28.
All matches of the World Cup will be played at two venues, which are only about 12 miles apart: Estadio Nacional in San José and Estadio Morera Soto in Alajuela. All the matches will be broadcast on the FOX Sports family of networks.
