Badminton England are disheartened to announce that Abigail Holden has withdrawn from the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Holden suffered a serious knee injury in her final preparations and will no longer be able to compete.
The Wokingham athlete was hoping to impress in her Team England debut on home soil.
Holden said: “I am heartbroken that I will no longer be able to represent Team England at the Games in Birmingham, the timing of this injury has been awful.
“I will continue to work hard so that I can come back stronger and hopefully represent Team England at future Commonwealth Games. I will be supporting the team and I wish them all the best!’
Holden finished third in the FZ Forza Dutch International in April and has progressed to the Round of 16 in several of her tournaments this year.
Team Leader Mark Beecher said: “This is such a blow for Abi and the Team as this would have been her first Games and a home Games at that.
“She was totally focused on the Games and her training to perform at her best for Team England and the Badminton team.
“Abi is already focusing on her recovery from this injury and her pursuit to represent England at future Games and her pursuit to move up the World rankings.
“We are wrapping everything we can around her as this is a truly disappointing blow for her.”
Holden has continued to lead the charge on the singles circuit and was crowned English Champion aged 22.
Performance Director Morten Frost added: “I really feel for Abi sustaining an injury so close to the Games to represent Team England at her first multi-event Games.
“We will work with Abi to get her fully recovered and back focusing on to the next Games and Championship events.”
