December 28, 2021 – Major League Soccer (MLS) – Austin FC News Release
Austin, TEXAS – Austin FC announced on Tuesday that the Club has signed free agent striker Maximiliano “Maxi” Urruti to a two (2) year guaranteed deal.
“I’m very excited for these new beginnings with Austin FC,” said Urruti. “I’m happy to wear these colors and can’t wait to celebrate with all the fans at Q2 Stadium. Vamos Verde y Negro!”
An MLS veteran with nine (9) years of experience, Urruti (pronounced “Urr-oo-tee”) began his career in the youth system at famed Argentine club Newell’s Old Boys – also previously home to players such as Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi, Marcelo Bielsa and Mauricio Pochettino. Urruti scored his debut goal with the Rosario-based outfit in 2011 and would go on to find the back of the net a further eleven times before leaving his home country in 2013 to feature within Major League Soccer.
After spending his first two (2) seasons predominantly with the Portland Timbers, scoring 10 goals in 30 appearances, Urruti moved to FC Dallas ahead of the 2016 MLS season where he would go on to start 90 games in Frisco, scoring 29 goals while registering 20 assists over the course of three (3) seasons.
Urruti was traded to CF Montreal ahead of the 2019 MLS season where he participated in 46 games, scoring nine (9) goals, and notching eight (8) assists. In 2021, Urruti was traded to the Houston Dynamo, scoring seven (7) goals in 25 starts in his most recent campaign.
In total, Urruti has made 238 appearances during his MLS career, recording 60 goals and 37 assists. Over the course of his MLS career, he’s won an MLS Cup, the Supporter’s Shield, a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup title, qualified on two (2) occasions for the CONCACAF Champions League and featured in the MLS Playoffs four (4) times.
“Maxi is a winner with a proven history of scoring goals and creating chances,” said Austin FC Sporting Director Claudio Reyna. “He’ll help us become more dynamic in the attacking third and we look forward to welcoming him and his family to Austin.”
Urruti is a permanent resident of the United States as a Green Card holder and will not occupy an International roster position.
