After a rainy invite in Bismarck Friday morning, the weather conditions were greatly enhanced for the Minot High Majettes’ fourth golf invitational of the season Monday in Dickinson. As the circumstances improved, so did the team’s placing, as the Majettes finished in fourth place with a team score of 364.
The tournament marked the second time Minot finished as high as fourth place in a tournament on the young season, and the first since the Majettes’ fourth-place finish in the season-opening Turtle Mountain Community High School Invite.
Their score also marked the second-lowest aggregate mark of the season, just five strokes above their Aug. 20 St. Mary’s score.
For the Dickinson High Invitational, the squad was faced with a challenge at Heart River Golf Course.
“Heart River is a tale of two courses,” head coach Scott Foltz said. “They’ve got an upper course and a lower course. The upper course is wide open, and it’s long and challenging. The lower portion is shorter, but it’s much more narrow. You’ve got to be a little more careful with your club selection and your strategy in general.”
Minot overcame the obstacles well, as Mackenzie Strange shot an 86 on the day to lead her squad. Her total marked her second-lowest of the season only to the second day of the Aug. 16-17 East-West Tournament that saw Strange record an 82 to polish off her two-day total of 171.
“Mackenzie used her driver to place herself in a good spot for her approach shots,” Foltz added.
Cali Wilson registered a total score of 88, good for the second-lowest mark on the team as well as a personal season-best, beating her score from the St. Mary’s Invite by two strokes.
Sidney Ressler’s 93 pulled in at third on the club, followed by Addison Sorenson’s 97, Avery Falcon’s 99 and Morgan Strange’s 102.
Mandan High School grabbed the top spot in the tournament overall in a tiebreaker with Century using its fifth score, and the Braves’ Anna Huettl’s 75 netted medalist honors.
The Majettes will now have over a week to rest up before their next invitational, currently scheduled for Aug. 31 at Riverwood Golf Course in Bismarck. Tee time is pegged for 10 a.m.
