Why Thiago Silva Could Miss Chelsea’s Next Match

Chelsea’s 36 year old central defender, Thiago Silva, is expected to be missing for Chelsea’s next match against Newcastle on 21 November.

That game has been moved for live television coverage to a 12.30pm UK kickoff away at St. James’ Park. Thiago Silva has been called into Brazil’s squad for their World Cup qualifiers against Venezuela on 14 November and then away to Uruguay on Tuesday 18 November, with kickoff at 11pm UK time.

When Chelsea played Southampton aftet the international break, Thiago Silva was not selected having played at 2am on Wednesday against Peru, with the game against the Saints kicking off 85 hours later.

Frank Lampard said in the pre-match press conference for that game:

“Thiago Silva after his trip [with the Brazil national team], is not in the squad. He’s not unfit but he’s not ready to play in the weekend’s game due to the travelling he’s done.”

The Newcastle game is away from home, therefore requiring a flight for Chelsea from London and is less than 84 hours after full time for Brazil in Uruguay.

Therefore, it is unlikely that Thiago Silva will start that match, meaning Lampard will have to select from two of Kurt Zouma, Antonio Rudiger, Fikayo Tomori and Andreas Christensen. Most likely, Rudiger will partner Zouma.

Thiago Silva was also rested for Chelsea’s away trip to Krasnodar with Lampard explaining that he was keeping him fresh for upcoming games:

“Thiago is fit. Taking him out of Russia was a maintenance issue. He could have played if he had to but we had to put it in context of what is ahead of us. I’m making sure we get the best out of him towards the end of the season.”
